The Bedroom

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
The Bedroom

Dutchman Vincent van Gogh lived in the period 1853-1890. His artistic fate is very interesting and heavy. All his immense creativity – 900 paintings and around 1100 drawings- he created over the last decade of his life. He is impressionist. His large, vigorous brushstrokes transmitted in a compelling way energies and emotions.

"Bedroom in Arles” is one of the most famous of his paintings. The picture presents Van Gogh's bedroom in "The Yellow House” on the Square Lamartine in Arles. Painting and decoration of the house were made by the artist. You can notice the strange perspective which is transmitted in the painting. You are left with the impression that the room was trapezoidal.

In this picture we can see one of the rooms, in which Vincent Van Gogh spent his time in Arles. The door in right is heading to the upper floor and the window is watching to the garden. Van Gogh loved this room very much. When the keepers of this hotel room decided to raise the bills, he putted them on trail. This process was successful for him, because he won it and the owners were forced to pay him back twelve francs. This painting shows the room in bright and positive way, because this room was one of the most important places for Van Gogh’s masterpieces.

The painting is oil on canvas measuring 72 × 90 cm

The Bedroom

Dutch painter Vincent William van Gogh, who lived in the period (1853-1890) is known to be a self-taught artist who changed the face of Post-impressionism. The Bedroom or The Bedroom in Arles is one of his well-known paintings. He painted this in 1889 when he was in Arles with a lot of enthusiasm as he prepared to welcome his friend. His paintings had simplicity, strong expression of emotions through vivid and bold colors and use of thick paint and heavy brushstrokes.

The Bedroom shows Van Gogh’s knowledge and inspiration of Japanese prints where he has omitted the shadows. The painting shows the bedroom interior of ‘The Yellow House’ he stayed in. There is simple furniture in the room;a bed, two chairs and a table with water on it. There is a window that overlooks the street. The wall on the left has the door to the second bedroom. The walls are decorated with his work. These are portraits of soldier Paul-Eugene Millet and poet Eugene Boch who influenced him in a big way.It is because of the odd angle of the wall; the objects in the room seem to be tilted upwards. This room was in the corner of ‘The Yellow House’.

Van Gogh pursued various careers before he decided to become an artist at the age of twenty seven. In his decade long career (1880-1890), he produced over 2000 works of art that included about 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings. His artwork included landscapes, still life, portraits and self portraits.

“The Bedroom” is oil on canvas measuring 72 x 90 cm and was developed after Vincent William van Gogh had mastered his own palette and lived in Arles. During that time the work of Vincent lacked a lot of brush strokes as he wanted to capture a lot in his paintings and used a palette knife to spread colors.
