The Milkmaid

Jan Vermeer(1632-1675)
The Milkmaid
Johannes Vermeer van Delft is one of the greatest painters of the Golden Netherlands Age. He was born in 1632 and lived his entire life in the city of Delft. About his life we know relatively little. There are only 35 works recognized as his, but only three of them have the exact date of creation. Typical for Vermeer is a masterful rendition of light. The painting “Milkmaid” is thought to have been painted around 1657 - 1658. Oil on canvas measuring 14 x 14.5 cm. Critics say that in the face of the girl from “Milkmaid” lies part of the mystery of the “Mona Lisa”. Perhaps this is because part of her face is in shadow and one cannot assess whether she smiles or is concentrated. Soon there was a dispute about the unusual perspective of the picture. Overall, the canvas has had a happy destiny since its creation- there is no one who has not fallen under its fascinated, quiet charm.
